The victim has been identified as Rajwinder Kaur.

Meharban police have registered a case against her husband, Bittu Singh, father-in-law Karnail Singh and mother-inlaw Balvir Kaur for dowry death following a complaint by the victim’s father.

In his complaint to police, Roshan Singh, a resident of Rod village in Phagwara, said since his daughter got married to Bittu Singh, her husband and in-laws had been harassing her for dowry, and had also stopped her from talking to her parents and visiting her maternal house.

Therefore, unable to take the harassment anymore, she committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan of her room, Roshan alleged.

Meharban police station house officer (SHO) Ashwani Kumar said a case under section 304-B (dowry death) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) had been registered.

The police handed over the body to the family members after conducting post-mortem examination at the civil hospital. No arrest has been made so far.
