Victim Mamandeep Kaur, 28, was staying with her husband Gurpreet Singh in Mona Greens, Zirakpur. The two had shifted here after their wedding on June 20 last year.

The accused, who is from Kotha Guru in Bathinda, is on the run.

In his compliant, victim’s brother Gurdev Singh, who arrived here from Bathinda, said he found Mamandeep’s body in the house on Thursday night.

He told police that Gurpreet had called him to say that Mamandeep had injured her head with a sharp object and was refusing to go to hospital.

“I asked him to make me talk to Mamandeep, but he pretended that he could not hear me and disconnected the phone. He later did not pick up the phone. I sensed something was wrong,” said Gurdev, who rushed to Zirakpur soon after.

Preliminary investigations revealed that after staying in London for about 10 years, Gurpreet was deported last year and was without work since then.

Gurdev said Gurpreet had been harassing his sister for dowry.

“For the past few months he had been asking her to arrange money for purchasing a car as he wanted to start a cab service. As she refused to ask me and our parents for money, it led to frequent fights between them,” Gurdev told police.

A case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at the Zirakpur police station.

Meanwhile, police handed over the victim’s body to her family members after conducting the postmortem at the Dera Bassi civil hospital.
