Injured AAP MLAs seek police action against Punjab assembly staff

As the incident took place inside the assembly, police claimed it’s beyond their jurisdiction. No first-information report (FIR) has been registered.

Two Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators who were hospitalised after getting injured during eviction of the party MLAs from the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Thursday have filed a police complaint against the assembly staff.

As the incident took place inside the assembly, police claimed it’s beyond their jurisdiction.

“We will collect and send the evidence (video recordings and medical reports) to the Punjab speaker for further action,” said Poonam Dilawari, station house officer, Sector 3, Chandigarh.

Jagraon MLA Sarabjit Kaur Manuke, who had fallen unconscious during the melee, told the police that she was roughed up and hit on the head by the ward-and-watch staff. Nihal Singh Wala MLA Manjit Singh said besides injuries inflicted on him, his turban was also tossed during the scuffle.

No first-information report (FIR) has been registered.
