Punjab health minister Surjit Kumar Jyani on Saturday paid a surprise visit to the local civil hospital to inspect the prevailing state of affairs.

He talked to the patients admitted in various wards to know if they were getting adequate facilities. The response was fairly positive.

Due to a holiday, the administrative staff was not available. Some of the doctors too were absent in the OPD ward but the minister was informed that they were on leave.

Senior medical officer Anil Mohindra apprised him of deficiency in staff and other infrastructure. Later, talking to media persons, Jyani said he would give 7/10 marks to the hospital authorities in cleanliness. He said the government was in the process of recruiting more staff for the hospital.

When asked about up gradation of the hospital to a 300 beds one as he had announced on his previous visit, he said the department would first fulfill the necessities of the existing 200 beds.

He declined to comment on the proposed tertiary cancer hospital in the district, stating that only the union minister of state for health Santosh Chowdhary could inform about it.
