Kin oppose inter-caste marriage, couple commits suicide in Sangrur
Police said the couple took the extreme step as their families did not allow them to marry.
A minor Dalit girl and her upper caste boyfriend allegedly committed suicide by hanging themselves from a tree at a cremation ground at Bahadurpur village in the Sangrur district on Wednesday night.

The deceased have been identified as Sandeep Kaur, 17, and Chamkaur Singh, 20, both residents of Bahadurpur, around 11 km from Sangrur.
Police said the couple took the extreme step as their families did not allow them to marry.
Village residents said the couple had fled to Bathinda to get married one-and-a-half months ago but they were brought back by their families.
Meanwhile, the elder sister of the deceased girl was also missing from Wednesday night.
Sandeep’s father Kirpa Singh said, “My daughter gave me food last night and after having dinner I went to bed. When I woke up at around 4.30 am, I found the doors of our house open while both my daughters were missing.”
He added, “I suspect my elder daughter, Hardeep Kaur, 19, eloped with another guy from our village.”
Chamkaur’s parents had died a few years ago and he is survived by two sisters.
His maternal uncle Gurtej Singh said, “After his failed attempt marry Sandeep, Chamkaur has been under depression.”
The police initiated proceedings under Section 174 of CrPC and the bodies of the deceased were handed over to their families after postmortem at the civil hospital, Sangrur.
“No suicide note was found from the crime spot. Police have recorded the statements of the family members of the couple,” said Longowal SHO Jatinder Pal Singh.
