An 18-year-old national-level junior handball player was shot dead by two youth at a dharamshala (rest house) in Hisar district on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Rakesh Singh of Danoda village in Narnaund block of the district.
Hisar superintendent of police (SP) Satender Gupta said, “A case has been registered against two unidentified youth. Teams have been formed to arrest them. We have got the CCTV footage of the incident.”
He said prima facie it appeared that the assailants had killed Rakesh after a fight over a mobile phone that was stolen in the dharamshala.
Rakesh and his two friends were in Hisar to attend a handball camp at Mahavir Stadium and were to leave for Warangal in Telangana on October 13 to represent Haryana in the Under-19 national handball tournament.
In his complaint to the police, Rakesh’s brother Ashok Kumar said, “My brother and his two friends had gone to have juice, leaving his (Rakesh’s) mobile for charging in the dharamshala. Some youth stole the phone. When Rakesh returned, he started searching for the phone and made a call to locate it. When it rang, it was in the possession of another youth. Rakesh entered into an argument, at which point the youth took out a gun and shot him.” Rakesh was rushed to a private hospital, where he succumbed to the bullet wound.
