In perhaps the first case of its kind in the city, a newborn was sold off to a New Delhi resident for Rs 8 lakh through a deal struck on social networking website Facebook.
Investigating the case, the Basti Jodhewal police arrested the baby's grandfather Feroze Khan, his aide, Irfan, and a nurse, Sunita, and an assistant, Gurpreet Singh, both employees at Satyam Hospital, Shingar Cinema road, where the baby was delivered.
The police recovered Rs 44,500 from their possession. The rescued baby was handed over to his mother, Noori.
The police have also booked one Amit Kumar of Delhi, who had bought the child from the accused.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, assistant commissioner of police (east) Satish Malhotra said a case was registered following the complaint by Noori of Iqbal Nagar.
Noori had stated that she gave birth to a boy at Satyam hospital at Shingar Cinema road on April 3. On April 10, her father, Feroze Khan, abducted her child while she was asleep. Later, she came to know that her father had sold off her son to someone with the help of a nurse, Sunita, for Rs 45,000.
ACP Malhotra said the police investigated the case and found involvement of a hospital nurse and assistant where Noori had delivered the child.
On questioning, they admitted that they had sold the child to one Amit in Delhi. The police raided Amit's residence in Delhi and recovered the child from his possession. The child was ill and was undergoing treatment in Gangaram Hospital in Delhi.
According to police, as Noori was separated from her husband, Feroze wanted to solemnise her second marriage. Therefore, he wanted to abort the child, but when doctors refused, Irfan advised him to sell the child after birth.
Later, after delivery, Feroze and Irfan came in contact with Gurpreet Singh, an assistant in the hospital and Sunita.
Gurpreet struck a deal with Amit on Facebook and also sent pictures of the newborn to him over the website.
According to sources, Gurpreet sold the baby to Amit for Rs 8 lakh, out of which he distributed a total of Rs 75,000 among Feroze, Irfan and Sunita.
The ACP said the police were investigating if the deal was struck on Facebook to register a case under the Information Technology Act.
He said the police were also investigating whether the accused sold newborns in the past.
