Punjab Congress has urged the Centre to deploy central forces during the civic polls in the state, scheduled to be held on June 7 and June 10.
Polling for municipal councils will be held on June 7, while that for municipal corporations of Jalandhar, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala will be held on June 10.
Addressing a press conference on Friday evening, PPCC vice-president Ashwini Sekhri, who is also heading the campaign committee for the civic body polls in Punjab, said to ensure fair and impartial elections it was necessary to hand over the security and maintenance of law and order to the central forces.
He said, "There is every possibility from the ruling combine to disturb and rig the elections for the benefit of its candidates as has been witnessed during the last elections."
Sekhri urged the Election Commission to direct all district electoral officers to arrange for videography of the civic polls to check rigging and ensure free and fair elections.
The list of Congress candidates for Jalandhar MC elections would be finalised by Tuesday. A total of 280 Congressmen had applied for party tickets from all 60 wards of the Corporation for the elections.
Congress leaders present at the press conference expressed fear of mass violence during the civic polls to ensure victory of the candidates of the SAD-BJP combine.
