Punjab Super League kickstarts in Ludhiana

Punjab Super League under-19 kickstarted at Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana on Saturday. Volleyball, basketball, handball and football matches under Punjab Super League, sports department, were held on the first day.

Punjab Super League under-19 kickstarted at Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana on Saturday. Volleyball, basketball, handball and football matches under Punjab Super League, sports department, were held on the first day.

In this league championship, teams of football, volleyball, handball and basketball of five zones – Ludhiana, Patiala, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Bathinda – are participating.

Punjab sports department director Rahul Gupta, who inaugurated the league, said, “The Punjab government is making extraordinary effort to uplift sports. The government has established Punjab Institute of Sports where world class facilities are provided to around 1,000 day scholars and 250 players.”

Punjab Super League winners will be awarded with Rs 2 lakh, while runner up and second runner up will get Rs 1.75 lakh and Rs 75,000 respectively.

On this occasion, deputy director, sports, Rupinder Ravi, assistant director Kartar Singh, district sports officer (DSO) Satpal Singh, Fatehgarh Sahib DSO Upkar Singh Virk, Punjab Basketball Association’s general secretary Teja Singh Dhaliwal and others were present.

In football, Hoshiarpur beat Gurdaspur 4-0 in men’s category. The women team of the same district thrashed Sangrur 5-0 and Ludhiana team registered a win over Tarn Taran 3-0.

Sangrur and Ludhiana defeated Muktsar and Jalandhar respectively in women’s category in volleyball, while Sangrur managed to beat Pathankot 3-0 in men’s category.

In handball, women teams of Tarn Taran and Ludhiana lost to Ropar and Ferozepur respectively. Ferozepur boys lost to Patiala 45-31.

In basketball, Ludhiana and Amritsar beat Jalandhar and Bathinda in men section, but Ludhiana couldn’t bag win in women’s category with its girls losing to Jalandhar 49-37.
