Superintendent of Patiala central jail Bhupinderjit Singh Virk told Hindustan Times: “There are no jammers installed inside the jail. We have recently recovered four mobiles from inside the jail along with a SIM card.” Up to 1,847 prisoners are lodged inside the jail.

Patiala police had recently booked three inmates in connection with the recovery of the mobiles and other accessories. The prison guards found these phones abandoned near the barracks while they were on patrol.

It was the second time within 15-days when cell phones were recovered from the jail. Earlier on November 21, mobile phone along with the SIM card was also recovered and police booked unidentified prisoner in this regard on Friday.

Along with the surveillance of CCTV cameras, the jail security conducts checking outside the jail of every person entering the jail premises and the people coming for the meetings with their relative-prisoners. However, the recovery raised serious concern over how mobile phones reach the jail?

Whenever the staff conducts raids inside the jail, almost every time they have recovered mobile phones, said the sources.

A case was registered under Section 52 A of Prisons Act at Tripuri police station on Friday against inmates Yadwinder Singh of Patiala and Jagtar Singh and an unidentified person for the recovery of three mobile phones.
