A Mohali hotelier, Nirankar Singh (60), shot his wife dead on Wednesday morning over an argument while they were on their way in a car to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) for a medical check-up.

The incident happened at around 9:30 am outside Manav Mangal School in Phase-10, Mohali. As per the police, Singh shot his wife, Kulwant Kaur, also in her sixties, following an argument. The husband fired four times from his licensed pistol at point-blank range. The wife was later declared brought dead at Fortis Hospital in Phase-8.

Nirankar Singh is owner of Sarao hotel in Phase-10. He lived in United Kingdom till 2004, and then he shifted to Mohali, where he set up this hotel. The couple lived on the first floor of the same hotel. They have two children, Navpreet Singh and Aman Kaur, both married and settled in UK.

Police have arrested senior citizen Nirankar Singh and is in the process of registering an FIR. The pistol used in the crime has also been recovered. Eyewitnesses said Singh was in state of shock after shooting his wife and himself took out the body from car.

This is the third murder in Mohali in less than a month. On September 23, veteran journalist KJ Singh and his mother Gurcharan Kaur were murdered at their Phase 3B2 house in Mohali. Police are yet to crack the case.
