Interacting with the media at the civil hospital during a visit to its drug de-addiction centre, he said the demand was a political stunt of Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda. “Earlier also, a handful of people tried to divide Sikhs at the behest of certain vested interests,” he said, “but I am thankful to former prime minister Manmohan Singh that he didn’t let them have their way.”

“Manmohan Singh remembered that his father had been imprisoned during the Sikh gurdwara movement,” said Badal, adding that the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) had again asked the Centre to intervene and even the people of Haryana were against the move. “It is an illegitimate demand, cannot be accepted,” he said.
