Snatcher held with heroin, weapons

In their ongoing drive against anti-social elements, the Batala police have arrested a snatcher who was involved in at least 10 incidents of snatching in and around the town.

The police also recovered 260 gm heroin, one .315 bore country-made pistol, three alive cartridges and one motorcycle from his possession.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, Batala SSP Manminder Singh said that after acting on a tip-off, a police team under city police station SHO Harit Sharma laid a naka near Bank Colony Hansli bridge and during checking they apprehended a person who was riding a motorcycle without registration number.

During investigation, the police recovered heroin and weapons from the accused, who was identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi, a resident of Barriar village under Ghuman police station.

Subsequently, a case under sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act and sections 22, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused at the city police station.

During the interrogation, the accused confessed that he, along with his partner Kuldeep Singh, had committed six snatchings from various places in and around Batala. He said that after the arrest of Kuldeep Singh, he alone committed four more snatchings.

The SSP said that the Batala police were working round-the-clock and were committed to maintaining law and order in the town.
