Spate of crimes in Moga, 5 murders, three rapes in 10 days

At a time when police are busy making claims of drug seizures and peddlers’ arrests as part of their special anti-drugs campaign, serious crimes such as murder and rape have become order of the day in the district.
Sample this: Five murders, three incidents of rape, including two gang-rapes, took place in the district all in a span of 10 days.
After May 15, the district reported major crime incidents almost on daily basis, raising a question mark on the working of the police force. Also, petty crimes such as snatching, thefts and scuffles also a routine affair.
Of the seven major crime incidents, five occurred in the Dharamkot sub-division, while two rape cases were reported under the jurisdiction of the Moga city police.
On the deteriorating law and order situation, Moga senior superintendent of police (SSP) Raj Jit Singh said, “We have cracked almost all major crime cases that happened recently. The accused have been arrested.”

May 17: Sher Singh of Fateh-Ullah-Shahwala village in Dharamkot allegedly kills his three-year-old daughter Jasmine and son Lovedeep (12). He was depressed as his two sons from his first marriage, including Lovedeep, were handicapped and bedridden.
May 19: Rachhpal Singh (28) allegedly thrashed by five men and poisoned to death in his fields at Kot Isse Khan village in Dharamkot. The accused are still absconding.
May 23: A 14-year-old girl abducted and allegedly gang-raped by three boys near Mehna of Dharamkot. The accused teens were arrested.
May 23: A Moga-based woman accuses her husband and his friends of raping her after spiking her drink. The man, his parents and three others still at large.
May 24: Chand Singh (61) of Khosa Kotla village in Dharamkot allegedly killed by his neighbour who hit him with a stick after a minor scuffle. The accused is absconding.
May 24: A Faridkot woman accuses her brother-in-law of sexually assaulting her after her parents failed to give dowry demanded by her in-laws. Her husband, her in-laws booked and arrested.
May 25: Manjit Kaur (60) of Lohgarh village in Dharamkot killed by her addict nephew after a minor scuffle. The accused was arrested.
