Travel fraud: Gatka coach’s aide in police net

Police have arrested one more person in connection with the travel fraud case involving Punjabi University ‘gatka’ coach Avtar Singh.

Police have arrested one more person in connection with the travel fraud case involving Punjabi University ‘gatka’ coach Avtar Singh.

The accused has been identified as Gurmeet Singh, 45, a native of Bajra village in Ludhiana. Sadar police station SHO Jaanpal Singh said during investigation it came to light that Gurmeet was the middleman who had introduced the complainant Sarabjit Kaur to Avtar. Avtar was arrested on Monday on the allegation of cheating Sarabjit and her husband of `10.30 lakh on the pretext of sending their son to Canada. The SHO said Gurmeet was known to the victim’s family. He said during interrogation Avtar told police that three more people, Gurmeet, Sukhdarshan Singh and Manjit Singh alias Manjinder Singh, all natives of Ludhiana, were involved in the racket.

Avtar said he was part of a gang that targeted people who were interested in going abroad. SHO said Manjit Singh was the kingpin of the gang. It has also come to light that a relative of the complainant had been duped of around Rs 15 lakh by the accused on pretext of sending him aborad.

The SHO said that the police are conducting the raids to nab the two accused, whose addresses have been revealed by Avtar Singh.

Avtar Singh was on Thursday produced in a court of chief judicial magistrate (CJM) Sumit Gai who sent him to one-day police custody.
