The change in weather, however, will be short-lived and the temperature is expected to rise in the next few days.
On Monday, the maximum temperature was 39.2 ºCelsius (C), while the minimum was 29.2ºC.
The residents woke up to an overcast sky and strong winds accompanied by drizzle on Monday. The meteorological department said westerly disturbances passing through north region had resulted in the sudden change in weather.
“There is a dip in the temperature,” said Surinder Paul, director, meteorological centre, Chandigarh. “However, for the next few days, the weather will be dry.”
The meteorological department has predicted that the maximum temperature will be around 42ºC on Tuesday, but has forecast duststorms/thunderstorms at isolated places in Haryana and Punjab in the next 24 hours, but mainly sunny days thereafter.
Chandigarh and places in Punjab and Haryana have been reeling under a severe heatwave for a week now. The maximum temperatures have hovered between 40 and 43°C.
