Sanjay Sharma, joint secretary of Taekwondo Federation of India (TFI) was arrested and sent to Bokaro district jail on charges of sexual exploitation of a minor taekwondo player.

Bokaro Sector-4 police raided Sharma’s BSNL Road based house under Bank More police station in Dhanbad on Saturday evening and arrested him on the basis of an FIR lodged by the victim with Kamla Market Police station New Delhi. Bokaro Sector-4 police station officer in-charge K Mishra confirmed his arrest under POCSO Act and said that he was sent to jail.

Bank More police station officers in-charge Manoj Kuma said the Bokaro police arrested Sharma and took him away to Bokaro.

Sanjay Sharma is joint secretary of TFI and also secretary of Jharkhand State Taekwondo Association JSTA). His elder brother Prabhat Sharma is national general secretary of TFI

Police took the action on the basis of an FIR lodged at Kamla Market police station New Delhi on February 8 by the victim girl, who also belongs to Bermo subdivision of Bokaro district. She said Sanjay had been sexually exploiting her since 2008 and threatened to make her photo (in objectionable position) on social media, if she disclosed the matter.

She said she was a 15 year old and class 9 student in a Bermo School when she started learning martial arts . The then taekwondo coach Kamlesh Thakur raped her during a championship. When she complained to Sanjay Sharma he called her to his Harmu based quarter in Ranchi and he too raped her there. Since then he has been exploiting her and threatening to put pictures on the social media, she said in the complaint.

The Kamla Market police sent the FIR to Sector-4 police Bokaro on February 10 for action.

However, Pratibha Sharma, wife of Sanjay Sharma alleged that former national taekwondo president Harish Kumar (IAS) has manipulated the case and got him arrested to settle an old score idue to federation politics. “Why has the girl filed the FIR in Delhi, rather than at Ranchi, that too after nine years. Harish Kumar is trying to defame Sanjay and his elder brother ( Prabhat Sharma) who is national general secretary. he wants the post”, said Pratima over telephone from Bokaro.

Pratima further charged that the alleged victim was of loose character and is known to have absconded from her own home on several occasions. “She had been working in my petrol pump for five years and had left work in June 2016 when my husband questioned her frequent absence from duty”, she said.
