The digital medium has been taken by storm with numerous web series that are path-breaking and unique. While acting and a good script go hand in hand, several new shows have been called out for their impeccable casting. What also stands out is the casting of Marathi actors in popular web series. While actor Mithila Palkar was the one to break ground with her viral music videos and series Little Things, we speak to Marathi stars on their digital beginnings and more:

Mithila Palkar
I enjoy the medium because: It is all inclusive. The fact that we are all here to purely tell stories and nothing else. There is no hero/heroine anymore. We are all narratives of people around us.

USP of web series: All of what I mentioned above. It’s limitless. It doesn’t bound you with time, language, genre and so far, it’s also been free of censorship.

Digital projects: Little Things. I did a film called Chopsticks with Abhay Deol and Vijay Raaz, directed by Sachin Yardi. It is a Netflix film.

Any change you would like to make: I’ll think about this. But for now, I enjoy it for what it’s worth. It’s given me several opportunities and recognition. And it’s certainly here to stay as a medium.

I enjoy the medium because: There is freedom for every artiste to do and say his/her own story. You get to see sometimes complicated and sometimes extremely real stories and characters. The fact that you don’t need to tweak the content for the approvals that are films meant to get. The stories the content characters everything seems very engaging and interesting.

USP of web series: I think, films or television both have a certain audience to cater to. Hence, it is living up to the audiences so much more. What makes web stand apart is its unapologetic approach and telling the story as it is. I love that about web. Everything is straight forward you don’t need to filter it.

Digital projects: I did Damaged last year. Now, I am working on few will give you details once the time is right.

Any change you would like to make: I think there are pros and cons of everything. I think nudity is used to an extreme extent, just in the name of content. Sometimes it’s not required when the story and the content is apt and correct.

I enjoy the medium because: Honestly, I don’t chose projects based on the medium. But, what interests me about the digital space is that it gives you a kind of freedom to explore different content. The content is not box-office driven or TRP related. And, by this I do not only mean intimate scenes or sexual innuendoes. .

USP of web series:The ability to experiment with a subject, treat and approach it differently is what is its USP. For example, a television show or film have to work in the boundaries of budget, locations, business aspect etc. These limitations are not there on web. You have the liberty to have various genres in one place and at one click.

Digital projects: I recently shot for Nagesh Kukunoor’s City of dreams. It will be aired on Hotstar on May 3.

Any change you would like to make:Nothing occurs to me as the top of my head. Honestly, I feel we all are still exploring this medium, It is still very new and we all need time to explore and experiment with it. As an actor it is too soon for me to judge it.

I enjoy the medium because:I think, I really enjoyed doing digital. I feel it is an opportunity for actors looking to get out intricate details of characters. The format is very different. It gives more space and time for an actor to evolve and grow with its character. It gives one the advantage to explore a role with each working day. It was a delight for me.

USP of web series: So far, it has to be content. For example, Hutatma is an historical event which is rarely discussed. I come from Marathi school background and did not have enough information in it. It has been possible only on the digital medium as there is a certain audience. There is a section that is hungry and eager for content. When there is a need there is supply. It provides the stimulation people are looking for. Also, the format is intriguing as every episode builds up like a film.

Digital projects: Jaypraad Desai’s Hutatma on Zee5

Any change you would like to make: I think there is a bit of apprehension, and some of us are following the West when it comes to trends. It is a great thing that there is no censorship but that doesn’t mean we go craxy. It is like playing with fire. I believe, it will help to be responsible as excess of anything is harmful. There is a naive belief that certain elements will ensure a hit. This mindset needs to change.
