Admin of a popular piracy website Tamilgun.in was arrested on Tuesday in Chennai, according to a report in Indian Express.
Gowri Shankar is said to have been involved in 33 websites, some of them being porn sites, the report adds. Shankar is in the custody of Chennai city crime branch and has been booked under video piracy act.
While there are many websites that are involved in piracy of Tamil films, two names prominently feature in any discussion on the subject -- Tamilrockers.co and Tamilgun.in. As per some reports, it was said that Gowri belonged to Tamilrockers.co. However, it was later clarified that he wasn’t the said admin.
Both these torrent sites are infamous for piracy, sometimes leaking a film even before it releases. Tamilrockers.co was recently in news for leaking Ajith-starrer Vivegam online within hours of the film’s release.
Addressing the media, actor Vishal -- president of Tamil Nadu Producer Council and secretary of Nadigar -- on Tuesday asked media to give them some time to reveal all details of the case. “This is related to website piracy. A person who is behind one of such sites has been nabbed and is now in custody. Please give some time and we will announce all the details after investigation,” he said.
When asked if he had tipped the police about Gowri, the actor answered in the affirmative. Many have been speculating that he engineered the arrest.
Vishal has been at the forefront of fight against piracy. He has apparently been part of other attempts before as well.
