The first trailer for Diljit Dosanjh’s upcoming war movie, Sajjan Singh Rangroot, was released online on Tuesday, and the film looks like a traditional war epic with heaps of Sikh pride thrown in.
Diljit stars as Sajjan Singh, a soldier in the Indian Army’s Lahore Regiment, who is sent along with his battalion of Sikh soldiers to Britain to fight in World War I. At every turn, the Indians are discriminated against, they’re made to feel inferior and to obey the commands of the British, but they never lose sight of their identity. At one point, a British soldier asks them if they even know how to use their rifles, to which Diljit replies, “We don’t need rifles to tear people like you apart. We can do that with our bare hands.”
They realise that to win independence for India, they must fight - and win - the war.
Except one very noticeable typo - ‘Few man took the stand’ - the movie looks like a well-made war film, with large-scale action shot in the style of Saving Private Ryan and more recently, Wonder Woman.
Great speeches are made, and the fields of Punjab play just as important a role as the battlefields of Europe. Sajjan Singh Rangroot is based on a true story and is directed by Pankaj Batra and also stars singer Sunanda Sharma in her film debut. It is scheduled for release on March 23, on Bhagat Singh’s death anniversary.
