RIO DE JANEIRO: The Brazilians have an interesting concept at buffets here. They charge by weight. Elaborate spreads with tremendous variety also offer the ultimate revenge for all of us non-vegetarians against those veggie munching folks. In India we are used to paying far more for meat meals than dal-chawal. Here there is no such discrimination. You can pile your plate with palak (spinach) or pork but the cost is as per weight and not type of food. Now, spinach weighs far less than pork, but potatoes? I rather like this concept. But strangely enough even I, avid meat lover that I be, am chaffing at the inability to find some basic dal, sabzi. All this fancy animal stuff is great but we Indians do need our basics sooner or later, don’t we? Thankfully, like a true agriculturist sardar, I have carried along my tin of desi ghee. Enough desi ghee on anything and the taste of home explodes in my mouth. Can’t figure why my other Indian press colleagues baulk when they see me lace my food with the food of my ancestors.
