BAD GRIESBACH, GERMANY: Indian golfing ace Anirban Lahiri, returning to action after a five-week layoff, added a second successive three under 69 to make the cut at the rain-hit Porsche European Open here on Saturday. Lahiri was tied 33rd at six under while Frenchman Alexander Levy added a eight under to his first round nine under to move to an incredible 17 under as the event was reduced to 54 holes. India’s other player SSP Chawrasia crashed out with rounds of 69 and 75. Fog had caused nearly seven hours of loss on day one and two and a further three-hour suspension on Saturday saw organisers take the decision to cut the tournament to 54 holes.
ADITI IN HUNT FOR TOP-10 FINISH
MARBELLA, SPAIN: Aditi Ashok stayed in the hunt for a second successive top-10 finish on the Ladies European Tour as she finished her penultimate round with a 75 at the Andalucia Costa del Sol Open de Espana Femenino on Saturday. The 18-year-old Ashok had an adventurous day with three birdies, but also had six bogeys and nine pars as she shot three-over.
GANGJEE SLIPS TO TIED 30 IN ASIA-PACIFIC CUP
OSAKA, TOKYO: Rahil Gangjee (71) frittered away the early advantage with a mid-round collapse and slipped down the leaderboard to be tied 30th in the Asia-Pacific Diamond Cup here on Saturday. Gangjee, who recovered from a bogey start with three birdies on the trot, collapsed mid round five times between seventh and 15th. A birdie on 18th was some consolation, but it could have been a much better day.
SWIMMER MADHU CLINCHES GOLD
MUMBAI: Madhu PS clinched gold in the 100m backstroke senior men’s category with a national record time of 00:57.85 on the first day of the 70th Glenmark Senior Aquatic Championship on Saturday. Aaron D’Souza of Railways (00:58.91) and Arvind M of Karnataka (00:59.06) bagged a silver and bronze respectively.
In the 100m backstroke senior women’s category, Gujarat’s 16-year-old Maana Patel clinched gold with a time of 01:05.28.
SERVICES, RLYS IGNORED FOR BOXING POLLS
NEW DELHI: Livid at being ignored for elections to put together a new federation tomorrow, two of Indian boxing’s biggest stakeholders — Railways and Services Sports Control Board — have lodged a protest with the sports ministry. Neither Railways Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) nor the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) will be a part of the election process to constitute the Boxing Federation of India even though they have a vote each.
