MUMBAI: Backing dope-tainted wrestler Narsingh Yadav, Wrestling Federation of India secretary VN Prasood on Friday claimed the 74-kg freestyle wrestler would have clinched the silver medal had he taken part in the Rio Olympics.
“Narsingh would have won at least a silver medal, I can assure you that,” Prasood said on the sidelines of a press conference to announce a world level prize money event.
World Anti Doping Agency challenged the clean chit given to Narsingh by its Indian affiliate at the Court of Arbitration for Sports in Rio a day before he was set to take part in his weight class bouts.
Prasood said, “On August 18 Narsingh gave a medical at noon and had his weight-in at 1.30 pm. His name was even there in the fixtures. At 8.30pm in the night CAS released their judgment.
“CAS told him give your weight, don’t worry about anything in the afternoon, we’ll give a result at night. So why should we have been thinking about it (ban). We actually thought that after 21st they will take any action, (that) if they want to punish they will take away medal if Narsingh had won any medal,” he said.
SAD I COULDN’T BAG A MEDAL: DIPA
AGARTALA: Ace gymnast Dipa Karmakar said she is sad at not being able to snare a medal at the recently concluded summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
“I am sad I couldn’t manage a medal but I am happy to secure 15+ in the first level. It’s my first attempt in the Olympics and I have got to learn things. I didn’t even expect that I will be in the fourth position. I was hoping that I would secure seventh or eighth position but I am happy to be in the fourth position,” she said.
The Indian government has decided to confer the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award 2016, the country’s highest sporting honour, on Karmakar.
Coach Nandi has been selected for the Dronacharya Award.
CHITRESH LEADS OPTIMIST FIELD
MUMBAI: Chitresh T of the Tamil Nadu Sailing Association (TNSA) emerged the leading Optimist sailor after he bagged fifth place in the first race and came first in the second race at the Wet-nWild Regatta at Pawana Lake, Lonavala, on Friday.
