“The federation is considering implementation of the recommendations made by the review panel headed by Abhinav Bindra,” is the logic given by the NRAI for calling off the camp.

After dismal performance of the shooting squad at Rio, the federation had appointed a four-member panel headed by Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra to review what went wrong. One of the issues the panel had pointed out is lack of world-class ambience during the national camps.

The panel had recommended that the federation should be more proactive as the so-called national coaches in the camp aren’t competent enough to polish the skills of top shooters, which is why many shooters aren’t keen to join. Around 50 shooters were shortlisted for the fortnight-long camp. One of the selected shooters said, “There should be some solution till the time the federation is able to appoint national coaches.”

It’s uncertain whether issue will be sort out when the senior shotgun camp for the Asian championship starts from October 22. The federation also has plans to hold the junior shotgun camp from October 25. The national junior camp in rifle/pistol will start from November 2.
