Australian Open: Paes, Bhupathi advance in mixed doubles

India's Rohan Bopanna and China's Zi Yan lost in the Australian Open mixed doubles first round in Melbourne today while compatriots Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi advanced with their respective partners.

India's Rohan Bopanna and China's Zi Yan lost in the Australian Open mixed doubles first round in Melbourne on Sunday while compatriots Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi advanced with their respective partners.

Bopanna and China's Zi Yan lost to third seeds Maria Kirilenko of Russia and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia 6-7(6), 1-6 in the first round.

Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, on the other hand, registered contrasting wins to progress on Saturday.

Bhupathi and Australian Anastasia Rodionova defeated German Andrea Petkovic and Mariusz Fyrstenberg of Poland 6-2, 6-2. They will now face Sara Errani of Italy and David Marrero of Spain.

Paes and Cara Black of Zimbabwe, however, came through a tough match against Alisa Kleybanova of Russia and Max Mirnyi of Belarus 7-6 (2), 4-6, 12-10. They will take on Chinese Taipei's Chan Yung-Jan and Australian Paul Hanley in the second round.
