‘The way she has been playing…’: 2006 CWG medallist on PV Sindhu’s gold medal chances at Commonwealth Games 2022
Former shuttler Trupti Murgunde spoke about PV Sinhu’s gold medal chances at the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2022 (CWG 2022) in Birmingham.
With the Indian badminton team departing from Hyderabad airport for the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2022 (CWG) on Monday, the likes of PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen will be aiming for glory in Birmingham and bring back plenty of medals. A 10-member badminton contingent will be representing Team India and recently completed a training camp (conducted by Badminton Association of India), which took place in Hyderabad between July 18-24. Sindhu, who is also a two-time Olympic medallist, will be the main focus among the women shuttlers in the squad and Lakshya Sen will be the main focal point in the men's team.
Speaking to Hindustan Times during a brief media interaction, former shuttler and CWG medallist Trupti Murgunde spoke about Sindhu's gold medal chances in CWG 2022 and called it 'bright'. "Very, very bright chances for Sindhu, the way she has been playing. You all have seen her in the Singapore Open and the previous tournaments also what she's played. Very bright chances. The competitors who she is likely to face. She definitely has an upper hand against them. So definitely a good chance", she said.

Murgunde won a bronze medal in the mixed team event at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. Meanwhile, Sindhu is also a three-time CWG medallist, having won gold in the mixed team event at CWG 2018 in Gold Coast. Meanwhile, she won silver in the women's singles category in Gold Coast and a bronze in the same event at CWG 2014 in Glasgow.
This year, the 27-year-old shuttler has been in excellent form and won her first Singapore Open title, following her Syed Modi India International victory in January and Swiss Open win in March. The world no. 7 is expected to have an easy run-in to the finals of the women's singles event in Birmingham as she won't be facing her usual rivals from the BWF tours. The opponent closest to her is Canada's world no. 13 and 2014 CWG champion Michelle Li, Singapore's world no. 18 Yeo Jia Min and Scotland's world no. 18 Kirsty Gilmour.
