Only two of Saturday's six fixtures survived blizzards which swept across Britain, blanketing stadia and forcing clubs to postpone fixtures because of safety concerns.

There were no such problems in the early kick-off at the Stadium of Light however, where Welbeck struck with a low header in the 32nd minute which lifted the Black Cats into sixth place in the table.

The only other game due to take place on Saturday was Blackburn's clash with West Ham at Ewood Park. The poor weather had earlier also claimed Wigan's home match against Aston Villa, Liverpool's late game against Fulham. AFP
