Commonwealth Games 2022 Highlights Day 2: Weightlifters put on a show as Mirabai Chanu wins India's first gold

After a tough start to the deciding game, Manika takes a four-point lead to go 7-3 up. Magical point after magical point from Manika. 8 straight points for Manika and she wins it. Pure class! 11-3 in the final game. India level it 1-1 in the Women's Team - Quarter-Final 4 tie against Malaysia.

This game is a nail-biter! But it is India who is trailing. A big forehand from Ying Ho and she takes a three-point lead. Pressure mounting on Manika. Indian hopes are pinned on her after the team went down in the doubles tie. Lovely change of direction and Manika pulls two points back. India trail 7-9 and then 8-9. But Ying Ho moves to Game Point with a huge forehand. Manika again pulls one back, keeps the game alive. Ying Ho does it, 11-9 it is and she forces a decider.

Mirabai Chanu will the final weightlifter in clean and jerk, where she will start with a 105kg attempt, the highest weight in the category. 

Ying Ho looked to break down Manika after she conceded the first two games and she looked set to wrap up the game comfortably before the Indian threatened to script a return. But the comeback was halted in the fag end as the Malaysian won the third game 11-8. Indian hopes dented, is it?

Manika wins five consecutive points to go 8-4 up in the second game. Amazing defense from Manika! Pushed way back, but does it with the big forehand. Goes 9-5 up. Looks slightly relaxed after the first game. Game Point for Manika and she grabs it. 11-5 win for Manika and she goes 2-0 up in the tie.

Ying Ho putting a lot of backhand topspin to her returns, which initially affected Manika, but the India looked to return deep and keep the ball to her forehand side. Manika took an early lead 7-4 in the contest before Ying threatened to make a return. The Malaysian reduced the gap before saving two game points. But Manika closed the opening game comfortably with a 11-8 win

The Indian team, comprising Sunil Bahadur and Dinesh Kumar, remain in the lead in their Men's Pairs - Section C - Round 3 tie alhough their opponents from Cook Islands had reduced the lead from 8-2 to 12-8. India desperately need to win this match to stay alive in the competition.

Miracle shot from Alice from under the table and Malaysia storm back in the fourth game to win it 11-6. The defense of Sian Alice and offense of Lyne has really damaged India's hopes early on in the quarterfinal tie. The reigning champion lose the women's doubles tie 7-11, 6-11, 11-5, 6-11. 

Manika Batra up next in the first of the four singles tie, against Ying Ho.

Mirabai Chanu is currently leading the women's 49kg weightlifting event.

Mirabai Chanu lifts 88kg in her second attempt, but fails 90kg in her third attempt. Her second attempt saw her set a new Commonwealth Games record.

Indian team starting to put some pressure on the Malaysian pair who haven't lost a match so far in CWG 2022. India lead 9-4 in the third game before they convert it impressively. India should be confident now from here on. They still trail 1-2.

Combination of slices from Sian Alice and the devastating forehand from Laren Lyne working strongly in favour of Malaysia as they take an early 3-0 lead in the women's doubles tie. Indian team call for a break and immediately come back to bag their first point. Superb play there from India! Masterful Table Tennis! India soon level the score at 4-all in the third game before taking a 5-4 lead.

Malaysian pair forces back-to-back errors from Tennison and its trouble for India. And they lose the second game as well - 11-6. India now 0-2 down in the Women's Team - Quarter-Final 4 tie having earlier lost the opening game 7-11

Indian doubles pair of Sreeja Akula and Reeth Tennison steadied themselves to take a 5-2 lead after going 0-2 down early in the second game. But the Malaysian pair stormed back in to level the score at 5-all. The change of pace tactic working for the Malaysian doubles pair.

The Indian team, comprising Sunil Bahadur and Dinesh Kumar, are presently in the lead in their Men's Pairs - Section C - Round 3 tie against Cook Islands. They are 8-2 ahead in the contest. India had earlier lost to Malaysia 17-14 in Round 1 but bagged a 36-4 win against Falkland Islands in Round 2.

Indian team, who won all their group-stage tie by a margin of 3-0, will be playing quarterfinal tie against Malaysia. Indian team comprises Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula, Reeth Tennison. The tie will begin with a doubles match followed by four singles matches.

Singapore's Ying Ying Chan lifts 61 kg (snatch) in her third attempt.  

Ghana's Winnifred Ntumi fails to lift 63 kg in her second attempt, but ensures she completes it her third attempt.  

In the women's weightlifting competition Singapore's Ying Ying Chan starts with a failed attempt with bars set on 57 kg. She, however, successfully completes the 58kg lift in her second attempt. 

Bangladesh's Maria Akter Ekra starts with a successful 58kg attempt, but fails to lift with the weight increased to 60kg. 

Ghana's Winnifred Ntumi lifts 60kg in her first attempt. 

Another development from squash: Joshna Chinappa beats Barbados Meagan Best 3-0 in the women's singles round of 32 event. 

However, Sunayna Kuruvilla lost 0-3 in the same event against Malaysia's Aifa Azman.

India have so far had a great day in almost all the events, barring cycling. However, the day can get even better.  With two medals in the kitty, all eyes will be on Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu, who will be competing in women's 49kg weightlifting event. Her event will start at 8:00 pm IST as per the schedule.

Saurav Ghosal secures a 3-0 win over Sri Lanka's Shamil Wakeel in the men's singles round of 32 squash event. After securing the opening two games 11-4, Ghosal wraps up the contest with a 11-6 win.
