Moments after Oliver Giroud put France back in the lead with a late strike, the defending champions found themselves in trouble as Mason Mount was fouled by Hernandez inside the box. Kane took the task of levelling the score again from the penalty spot. The England captain was successfully against his Tottenham team-mate Hugo Lloris in the 54th minute when he converted the penalty to keep the Three Lions alive in the game, but the goalkeeper wasn't required in the second time as Kane sent the penalty over the crossbar.

The decisive penalty miss prompted a ruthless reaction from Mbappe as he was seen laughing after an ecstatic celebration.

Mbappe knows the cost of missing a penalty having had his share of regret when he suffered a heartbreak on his his own penalty miss in France's shock defeat to Switzerland in 2020 Euro Cup.

England failed to trouble the scoresheet after Kane's miss, leaving France with a ticket to the semis where they will be up against history-makers Morocco, who stunned Portugal in the quarters earlier the same night in Doha.
