The third-seeded Indian Express duo, who got a bye in the first round, were no match for their opponents as they went down without a fight in the first set. And though they managed to pose some challenge in the second, the Czech-German pair proved to be too strong for them.

Paes and Bhupathi were playing together here for the first time since 2004 when they lifted the Rogers Cup doubles title. Besides 2004, they had also won in 1997. Bhupathi, partnering with other players, won the doubles title three more times here.

Berdych and Mayer, who beat Spanish duo Rafael Nadal and Marc Lopez in the first round, have now won back-to-back ties as a team for the first time.

Serena strolls, Clijsters stumbles
Former world number one Serena Williams crushed Alona Bondarenko to reach the second round of the WTA Toronto hardcourt tournament.

Williams, a 13-time Grand Slam champion, steam-rolled Ukraine’s Bondarenko 6-0, 6-3.

Second-seeded Kim Clijsters had put herself on the path to a victory (6-3, 1-2) but retired injured from her second-round match against China’s Zheng Jie which may put a spoke in her US Open title defence.
