Third seed Novak Djokovic made a winning start 6-1, 6-2 over Spain's Oscar Hernandez with the Serb trying to whip his clay game into shape.

"I didn't have any singles matches, on this surface, and I had very little time to make this transition," said Djokovic.

"But I was really playing aggressive and patient at the same time, hopefully I can continue."

Inspired Scot fourth seed Murray took the confidence from an ATP-leading three titles this season into his opener on the dirt, hammering his Romanian opponent with five breaks of serve. Murray's win was his 27th of the season against just two losses.

A relaxed and smiling Federer said his marriage over the weekend in Basel to longtime girlfriend Mirka Vavrinec has left him hungry for tennis as he seeks his first trophy of the season.
