India’s new head coach Wim Koevermans has called 37 players for the Nehru Cup preparatory camp. The Nehru Cup will be in New Delhi from August 23 to September 2.
The players have been asked to report on July 27 but the camp may not be in New Delhi, as Koevermans is said to be unimpressed by the facilities at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex. The pitch at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is not ready and the Ambedkar stadium is booked. “There is a possibility that the Nehru Cup camp might take place somewhere else in India or even abroad,” said an AIFF official who requested anonymity.
With the camp likely to last around a month, it will be interesting to see whether clubs release players. The Indian Professional Football Clubs Association (IPFCA) had decided that they would only release players for international duty as per Fifa rules. Its president RAJ Gomes said: “Every club will take the same decision, but the AIFF may soon call all for a meeting.”
