Martin O'Neill resigned as Aston Villa's manager on Monday just five days before the start of the new Premier League season.

He announced his decision in a joint statement with chief executive Paul Faulkner on the club website. Reserve manager Kevin MacDonald will be caretaker manager for the opening game.
