India's ultra-distance runner and three-time Guinness Record Holder Sufiya Sufi paid special tribute to Indian armed force on Kargil Vijay Diwas, which is celebrated every year on July 26. The runner completed a 470 km long expedition, which saw her run Siachen base camp to Kargil War Memorial in six days and eight hours. “Up till now my expeditions focused on making world records and challenge human limits. But running from Siachen till Kargil War Memorial was special as it was a tribute to the Indian Army," she told hindustantimes.com over a phone call.

Sufi shared glimpses of her expedition on social media, where she can be posing for photos with army personnel. Asked about the assistance, she received from the army during the course of her expedition, the ultra-distance runner said: “I had an ambulance, a team of doctors throughout the expedition. It was not just the support they actually pushed me to move forward when I was in a situation to collapse.”

Sufi, who holds multiple records from her previous expedition, rated the current one as one of the toughest mainly due to excessive heat. "This was more challenging than all my previous expeditions because I was not expecting this much heat. My body was regularly getting dehydrated and I also had to overcome a lot of heat strokes," she said.

Sufi said her next expedition will be in November in UAE, where she plans to cover the seven emirates, which is 700 kms in 7 days. Apart from this Sufi also has ambitions to circumnavigate in 2024.

“I've learnt quite a few lessons from this expedition. So I covered 90 kms in the first day, and the next day was spent dealing with heat stroke, because of the excessive heat. So while dealing with these challenges, I was determined to complete the expedition and prepare myself for bigger challenges,” she said when asked if this was part of the training for bigger goals.

Sufi has been an Under Armour Athlete since her first big achievement in 2020.
