Veteran comedy actor Johnny Lever has recently cut down on his number of film assignments for personal reasons. He has turned preacher and even a worker of miracles, according to hundreds of people who attend his prayer services every Sunday in different parts of Mumbai, Chennai and also in the US.
When asked about the transition, Johnny says, “It was God’s will. I had always been a religious person, but one incident changed my life. My son was diagnosed with cancer. I was helpless and turned to God for help. I stopped working in films and spent all my time praying for him. Ten days later, when he was taken for a test, the doctors were surprised because the cancer had vanished. It was the beginning of a new life for me.”
Currently, Johnny says that he has immersed himself in the holy scriptures.
“I was born a Roman Catholic but had never tried to read the Bible. Now, I ensure that I read it completely. I don’t boast about being a holy person but I know that prayer can do miracles,” he says.
The actor has also become particular about the kind of roles he will take up.
“I won’t do roles that are dirty, full of double meaning dialogues and vulgar gestures. Though such roles had made me a star, my conscience was against doing such scenes,” says Johnny.
