5G spectrum auction to begin today: What to expect

Reliance Jio, Adani Group, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are the four major participants in the auction.

The auction of 5g telecom spectrum, cleared by prime minister Narendra Modi-led Union cabinet in June, will begin on Tuesday. A total of 72 gigahertz (GHz) of spectrum, worth ₹4.3 trillion and with a validity period of 20 years, will go to sale during the auction.

Therefore, as the bidders get ready, here's what one can expect:

(1.) With business giants such as Adani Group (Gautam Adani), Reliance Jio (Mukesh Ambani), Bharti Airtel (Sunil Bharti Mittal) and Vodafone Idea in the fray, the bidding is likely to be dominated by the quartet.

(2.) Together, the four companies have submitted earnest money deposits of ₹21,800 crore, reported Livemint. This will allow them to bid for spectrum worth ₹2.3 trillion (53% of the total amount).

(3.) The report, however, stated, quoting industry analysts, said that telecom service providers were unlikely to big aggressively across the 10 bands that will be put up for auction.

(4.) Meanwhile, analysts at IIFL Securities expect the four major bidders to purchase spectrum worth ₹1.14 trillion across the 3.5GHz, 26 GHz, 850 MHz and 900MHz bands. The 3.5Ghz band, with nearly 330 units of airwaves worth ₹317 crore per unit, is expected to be the most popular among the bidders.

(5.) Within this band, India's two largest carriers – Jio and Airtel – are likely to pick up between 100MHz and 50-80MHz in key circles. The corresponding figure for Vodafone Idea, in its strong circles of Mumbai, Delhi, Gujarat and Kerala, could be about 40MHz, the report said.

(6.) The most meaningful participation may take place in the 26GHz band. Here, Adani Group is likely to pick up 100MHz across the country.
