The proposal to relocate ineligible residents of Dharavi to Mulund is facing opposition from ruling party leaders and the opposition. There are concerns about transforming Mulund East into 'Navi Dharavi' or 'Naya Mumbra.' BJP and opposition leaders have urged the chief minister and his deputies to not convert Mulund East into a slum area. The housing department has written to the urban development department seeking the transfer of land in Mulund for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP). Members from both the ruling party and the opposition have expressed their opposition to the proposal.
The state government of Mumbai plans to resettle slum dwellers from Dharavi in two plots owned by the BMC in Mulund, measuring 64 acres. These plots will be used to build residential units for people affected by the Dharavi Redevelopment Project. The housing department has requested the transfer of the land parcels to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd. BJP former MP Kirit Somaiya has objected to the plan, stating that rehabilitating so many people in one area is not appropriate.
