TV bosses are now moving forward with the plans, hiring the writer behind Russell Crowe's 2009 thriller State of Play to pen the story for a big budget 24 film.

Sutherland previously starred in 24: Redemption, a 2008 TV film shown as a prelude to the show's seventh season.

The 24 movie will follow in the footsteps of other TV shows, including The Simpsons and The X-Files, which have both made successful transitions to the big screen.
