More often than not, taking a generation leap in a television show is the best way to keep viewer-interest intact as that gives the show a new look and storyline, while keeping the theme intact.
With six daily soaps taking a leap, we tell you what to expect from the future of these shows.
Diya Aur Baati Hum
Leap: 5-10 years
After a good run of over three years, the show that’s about a husband, Sooraj (Anas Rashid), fulfilling his wife, Sandhya’s (Deepika Singh), dream to become an IPS officer, will now take a turn with the couple becoming parents. Neelu Waghela, who plays the role of the mother-in-law, Bhabho, says, "The drama with the kids will add to the show. The leap might be of 5 or 10 years and should take place by mid-March."
Saath Nibhana Saathiya
Leap: 10 years
The five-year-old show will see a 10-year leap. Post the leap, the daughters of Gopi (Devoleena Bhattacharjee) will be all grown up. The story will focus on Gopi’s kids, Meera (Tanya Sharma) and Vidya (Sonam Lamba), and Jigar’s kids, Tolu (Pratap Babbar) and Molu (Paras Handa). Gopi will be seen in a simple look when she comes out of jail after having killed Radha.
"We are all eager to see the response of the show post the leap. The story will be more exciting than ever before," says Devoleena.
Leap: 5 years
Having lost her husband Shiv, Anandi (Toral Rasputra) delivered twins on the seven-year-old show. Anandi will be seen taking care of her twins and Jagya (Shashank Vyas) will play a dad to a teenager.
Leap: 10 years
The show was about the relationship between a little girl, Darpan, and an elephant, Ganesha, who she accepts as her younger brother. Now actor Chavi Pandey will play the lead character. Having lost her memory, Darpan now lives in Mumbai with Mrunal Jain, her love interest in the show.
Chavi says, "The viewers will witness several changes in Darpan, who is now known as Ria. Ria will be scared of animals while Darpan was an avid animal lover."
Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai
Leap: Roughly 9 years
After six years, this Hina Khan and Karan Mehra-starrer will go in for a complete overhaul. A story about a couple discovering love post marriage while taking care of their family, will now leap forward almost nine years. It will take a leap by the end of March or April first week. The family will have shifted from Udaipur, Rajasthan to South Africa.
Karan, who plays the role of Natik, says, "The show needed newness and the audience can now look forward to many twists and a new feel. Things are being decided about the new story. We will shoot for it in abroad in March."
Leap: 2 months
After the love stories of Zoya and Asad, and Sanam and Aahil, now the story will move forward a few months. Sanam (Surbhi Jyoti) will now have a new love interest — Shaad Aftab Khan from Pakistan played by Varun Toorky — leading to a love triangle with Aahil (Karanvir Bohra).
Karanvir says, "It might be the shortest leap in the history of Indian TV. The focus will be on Aahil and Sanam’s love story. Tanveer’s daughter and Aditi Gupta’s character will be vying for Aahil."
