On Saturday night, Shankar Mahadevan beat Shaan in the grand finale of Music Ka Maha Muqabla on Star Plus. Shaan’s strikers put up a great show against Shankar’s Superstars, who won by a margin of just three or four points.

An elated Mahadevan says that his team was confident about its performance but not the result of the contest. “The finale was being telecast live. In any case, one can never predict the result of any contest. All one can do is work hard,” he adds.

When asked if his team and he were prepared for the final results, he says they were hopeful that they would win. “Shaan’s team was strong. They put up some fine acts and came across as being very confident. But I didn’t expect a few performances to go the way they did. There were jugalbandis and even some solos. I didn’t know how they would turn out but they went off smoothly. I’m sure that impressed everyone and we won,” asserts Mahadevan.

For those who harbour doubts about the singer-composer’s friendship with Shaan being affected by the result of the contest, he laughs and says that the two have been buddies for years and one contest cannot change their relationship.

“Apart from being professional friends, we associate personally too. We have worked together for so many years that I don’t think any contest can convert us from friends to foes. He’s a great singer and has worked hard with his team. That’s what really matters,” adds Mahadevan.

What next?
So is a music album with his teammates in the offing? “I want to release a rocking music album with my teammates. They are such amazing singers. They are hard working and talented youngsters.

I would love to have them sing a song or two for my forthcoming movie scores because they have the potential to bring in freshness to them.
They are bright and down-to-earth kids,”replies the Breathless singer.

Alisha Mendosa, Mahadevan’s teammate Loy’s daughter, rendered the track, Nach le, in Karthik Calling Karthik. She has also sung Oh boy, the only track in Sajid Khan’s next, HouseFull. Mahadevan says, “The male voice in this song is Tushar’s. I had promised him work when I met him on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa two years ago. He was promising then. He hasn’t lost touch. He’s very professional too.”

Generally, reality shows make celebrities into household names. Mahadevan agrees that he has gained from Music Ka Maha Muqabla. He is recognises wherever he goes.

No controversies
He laughs, “It’s unbelievable because I didn’t expect people on the streets and airports to talk so much about my show. They talk highly of it and even recognise me. The show wasn’t a make-or-break opportunity professionally but it helped me to become a popular face.”

The show was surrounded by several controversies but Mahadevan never commented on them. Wonder how he managed to stay off them. He states, “It’s got to do with the kind of person you are. My personality does not permit me to comment or get entangled in controversies. This has helped me maintain a clean image.”
