A lot of contestants emerge changed men and women after their long ordeal in the house but not Karan Mehra. The star of daily soap Yeh Rishtaa Kya Kehlata Hai, was evicted this weekend from the popular reality show Bigg Boss 10 and says that he has no regrets because he stayed true to himself throughout his stay in the house.

Now that he is out, Karan spoke with HT about all that went down in the house. We asked him whom he hopes should win and whom he definitely doesn’t. Karan also spoke about never wanting to go back again, the seemingly unfair elimination criteria set for him and what happened in the real world while he was inside. Here are a few highlights from the interview:

You played it really safe the entire time you were inside. Could that be the reason why you are the first celebrity to get evicted?

I don’t think I was playing safe. I cannot indulge in excess drama. There are certain things that I will stand by – not being abusive or disrespectful to anyone. I’ll never do that. It is not my responsibility to babysit anyone. They are all adults on the show. There were a few situations where we had to take a stand and we did. I have no regrets about the time I spent in the house. I have not fallen in the eyes of my fans. They still respect me. I’ve been in the industry for 15 years.

Yes, it’s really disheartening, even for my fans, that I was evicted. They were not expecting it. Even on social media, it seemed like I was the first choice of the people. I don’t understand what the criteria were.

So you think others will regret what they did inside the house once they step out into the real world?

Everyone has their own way of seeing things. I’ll stand by what I thought. Others were being so loud, trying to hit each other, even hitting each other at time. I just did my thing.

I was the last contestant to get nominated and got eliminated at the same time. It sounds a little funny but I was told that in my case 50% result was taken from the votes and 50% from the ‘content’...whatever that means.

Wait a second, isn’t the elimination process based only on the number of votes?

It was shocking to me too. In Lokesh’s case her elimination was judged 100% on her votes. They had different criteria for us. People are telling me to file a case against them but I think it is okay.

If given a chance, would you do it again? Expose your raw self on national television?

I did enjoy my time in the house but I would not want to go back. I mean, it has been 9 seasons but things are not totally like how they are projected. Yes, people bad mouthed each other and were abusive but I never chose to do that. I lived happily there. Maybe you can go there instead of me next time.

I’d rather not. Thanks very much.

(Laughs) That’s what everyone tells me. No one wants to go. It’s really not as bad as it seems on TV.

I remember the episode where you had to shred you wife’s picture to save Rohan from getting nominated. Which part of the journey was the most difficult?

That was the one. It was like destroying my wife. No one could understand how difficult it was. Nobody could value that picture more than me.

What did your wife say when she met you?

She was actually happy that I saved Rohan. She was very proud. She knew how hard it must have been on me. But I joined the photo together later. I don’t know if they showed it on television.

They did.

Yes, it made everyone in the house very happy.

Who do you think should win and who should definitely not?

Should... I think Gaurav and Rohan should win. Rohan has been handling it very carefully and maturely. Until now he had support from me and he supported me too.

I think Manu should not win. It’d set a very bad example.

Don’t say that. We are all about setting bad examples these days.

You know, Trump winning and all. I hope you know what happened in the US elections.

Oh yeah! I don’t know. What were the results?

Well, Donald Trump is going to be the new President of the United States.

That’s all about perspective. There will still be people like you and me Soumya, who don’t think like them. Manu is manipulative and sabko chaabi karke chala jaata hai. He pits celebrities and common people against each other. You remember when Salman Khan asked if Manu gets extra physical with girls and so many of them agreed? Bani and Lopa too. I mean his parents, friends, are all watching the show. Is this how he wants to represent the common people?

He said it to Bigg Boss too: ‘Karan ko le jaao Bigg Boss, ye apni biwi ko bahut miss karraha hai’. If I meet him ever, I will tell him straight that I don’t care about him.

He is not the kind of guy who should win. If he does, hats off to the makers.

So what’s next? Back to the good ol’ telly?

Let’s see. I am aiming for something better. Not TV because it takes so many hours of your life away. I want to take it easy for a while.
