Tensions between China and the Philippines are rising after a Chinese J-16 fighter repeatedly maneuvered close to a Philippine C-208 aircraft near disputed Huangyan Dao, also known as Scarborough Shoal. Philippine officials described the encounter as an aviation safety risk during a routine maritime patrol. China, however, accused the Philippine aircraft of illegally entering what Beijing calls its territorial airspace and said PLA forces tracked and warned the aircraft to leave. Chinese authorities also warned Manila against what they called “provocative acts.” The encounter highlights growing military tensions in the South China Sea and the risk of further escalation.
