India calls for negotiated peace in Sri Lanka

India called for a negotiated political settlement on Wednesday even as Sri Lanka stepped up its offensive against Tamil Tigers. Sri Lankan helicopters fired rockets at Tamil Tiger rebels constructing a trench during three days of clashes that killed at least 85 people, the military said on Monday. Manmohan Singh told a joint news conference along with South African President and Brazilian President in New Delhi that it calls for a negotiated peace.
