Authorities in West Bengal have said that they would not return farmlands acquired for the Nano car plant. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said that only 70 acres of land would be returned and appealed to Tata Motors to resume work. The Trinamool Congress said the state government has lost its moral right to stay in power. Many farmers in Singur, where Tata Motors has set up the factory, said they were forced off their lands without adequate compensation.
