WMF restoring Sumda Chung monastery in Leh

World Monument Fund is restoring 800-year-old Sumda Chung monastery in Leh, which is in ruins. This early period of Buddhist monastic architecture in the western Himalayan region was formative in the evolution of Tibetan Buddhism. Standing high at 4,600 meters on a hillside overlooking a snow-fed tributary of the Zanskar River, the monastery comprises of three temples. Conserving this ancient monastery poses logistical problems as well as conservation challenges.
