In a setback to the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal, former Union Minister Babul Supriyo joined the Trinamool Congress on September 18. He was inducted into the party by Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek and TMC MP Derek O'Brien. Just days earlier, Supriyo had praised Mamata's challenger in Bhabanipur bypoll Priyanka Tibrewal. The BJP-turned-TMC leader was dropped from the Narendra Modi cabinet in the July 2021 reshuffle.
