Spectators gasp as Notre Dame’s iconic spire collapses
Notre Dame Cathedral’s iconic spire collapsed on Monday evening. Spire collapsed amid an inferno in the roof of the 12th Century building. Gasps could be heard by spectators who had gathered to view the fire. Dominique Bichon, an eyewitness described the scene as ‘upsetting’. “My daughter told me that the cathedral was burning. She saw that on the internet so I went down behind, I was on the bridge near the bridge behind the church and I started seeing those flames, and the roof was burning and then the spire. It was burning down, at a certain point we saw the roof crawl down and soon later the spire started bending and crawling and boom, the big smoke and flames and people couldn’t believe it. We couldn’t just believe what we’re seeing. And then the flames went on and on and on. And the firemen were trying to get close to the cathedral but it was not that easy up there, for many reasons,” he said.
