75% of Venice was under flood waters caused by strong winds that had caused an exceptionally high tide into the famous city on October 29. Residents and tourists alike were evacuated from St Mark's Square as fierce storms lashed the nation. Police wearing hip waders carried a number of children to safety as stranded tourists waited to be ferried to higher ground.
