Shervin Hajipour Wins Grammy: Jill Biden, in her speech said, a song “can unite, inspire and ultimately change the world.”
An Iranian singer who faces possible prison time has won a Grammy. Shervin Hajipour was stunned after US first lady Joe Biden announced that he had won the Grammy for new song for social change special merit award for “Baraye.” The song became an anthem amid the ongoing anti-hijab protests in Iran.
In an online video Shervin Hajipour was seen in a darkened room, wiping tears away after the announcement. The song “Baraye,” or “For” in English, begins with: “For dancing in the streets,” “for the fear we feel when we kiss.”

Through the song, the lyrics reflect on the reasons why young Iranians are protesting against the regime, ending with the slogan “For women, life, freedom.”
Shervin Hajipour was arrested following the release of the song and held for several days before being released on bail in October. He faces charges of “propaganda against the regime” and “instigating the violence,” according to Human Rights Activists in Iran.
Jill Biden, in her speech said, a song “can unite, inspire and ultimately change the world.”
“This song became the anthem of the Mahsa Amini protests, a powerful and poetic call for freedom and women's rights. Shervin was arrested, but this song continues to resonate around the world with its powerful theme: Women, life, freedom," the first lady added.
On Instagram, Shervin Hajipour wrote, “We won.”
