Trump, a Republican, told reporters on Thursday at a White House press conference that he had won the largest Electoral College victory since Ronald Reagan.
“We got 306 because people came out and voted like they’ve never seen before, so that’s the way it goes. I guess it was the biggest Electoral College win since Ronald Reagan,” he said.
But when a reporter pointed out that Bill Clinton and Barack Obama both exceeded (in both their victories) his 306 electoral votes, Trump said he meant by a Republican.
The reporter then pointed out that George H.W. Bush also won more votes: 426.
“I was given that information; I don’t know,” the president said, adding: “Actually, I’ve seen that information around. But it was a very substantial victory, would you agree with that?”
To be declared President, a candidate must get at least 270 out of a total of 538 electoral votes.
